Purging....

Purging..... As a VERY sentimental person and avid collector purging is hard! Ross and I have been working on the house. Just feeling like less is more! It is a process especially for me. The house is starting to feel so good, so light.

I felt like my studio has been weighting me down. I keep having dreams about packing and cleaning. It is amazing all of the anxiety I feel in the dream and then when I wake up. Conclusion..... I am purging my studio. Trying to get rid of things I don't need and packing up some of the sentimental objects the are cluttering my space. It is a process and I have such a short attention span (no wonder my kids are that way) that I get bored easy.... Find myself doing other things. Like blogging! I look around and even the places that I have purged and cleaned still feel full. Frustrating! I am just trying to work my way through the space then go back if I need to. Oy Vey!

Now back to cleaning.... And PURGING!!! That needs to be the key word!

Purging....

In the studio.....

I am back in the studio today. Always feels good to have a quiet day with the kitties. As I walk around my space I realize how many projects I have in progress. Some for personal satisfaction and others for work. Besides my looming fabric deadline here are a few others that I have calling to me.Sophiequilt.blog

This is a quilt that I started a long time ago...I embroidered one of my favorite quotes on it......

" I tell you, the more I think, the more I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people" - Vincent van Gogh

Now if I can only get Sophie off of it I could quilt it.....on my new Bernina 550 QE. Oh my, it is so amazing to sew on....its like butter! Quiet, smooth, and the stitches are perfect. I am in love!  Totally excited to quilt with it...which is one of the reasons that I haven't started quilting my "quote" quilt. Maybe tonight.....

Twopaint.blog

These are two paintings that I started when Ross and I were in the City. He is so awesome about letting me have personal creative time when we are on a trip. I am very lucky! I do hope to finish these soon. It had been months since I had painted, felt so good!

Cocoonlinen.blog

And now for my beautiful Cocoon Linen all folded nice and sitting on my table waiting for me to make skirts and pillows and bags.....OH MY!  Cocoon is my spring collection of fabric, inspired by butterflies and my daughters. They love to watch the butterflies on our wild flowers and chase them around, laughing! Just makes me smile thinking of it. The rest of my sample yardage should be here soon.... yummy cottons and voile. I am planning lots of fun projects for a Cocoon Simply Made Summer.

The projects are endless....I have several more in progress. Can't seem to do just one thing at a time - I float around my studio sometimes getting bored with one project and starting another then going back to the first one. Is that normal? I wonder if it is not the best use of my time be so scattered but I am not sure how to change it.

Well, I must focus.....back to the fall collection....feeling a little stuck at this time but it will all come together, doesn't it always!

Have a great day!

Tomorrow Morning.....

I am up in Portland today staying at my brothers house because tomorrow I get to be a guest judge on a Portland tv station - KATU -  that is doing a "Project Runway" type of show.

The Design Challenge is going to be a 6 week long competition between four designers from the Art Institute of Portland. This week is the first week and Westminster / Free Spirit is the featured fabric company and they asked me to be a guest judge! HEHE.....I think it will be so fun!

AMNW-Design-Challenge-500x100

On Monday they introduced the designers and had a HUGE stack of my Karavan Knits on the table....I feel a little giddy when I see that...makes me feel like a kid that just got an A on a spelling test!

Isabelleskirt.blog
In case you were wondering we do have the knits in the shop....we are hoping the patterns for the Isabelle skirt and Sondy top will be done soon.....patterns can take longer than you think sometimes. Totally annoying but a fact that I just have to get used to. Try to get used to!

Well, I'm off to hang out with my family...don't get to see them much so it is fun to chat!

Have a great night!

January 20, 2012....

I find that when I go through change I retreat, into myself, into my studio, but that is when my best growth comes out of me. I can honestly say I have changed so much over my 38 years. Or maybe change is not all that has gone on, I have discovered so much about myself, who I am and who I want to be. Not always an easy road for me.

Recently I have been wanting to get my tattoo for Teague. And the only person I want to do it is a old college friend, Cheyenne Sawyer. He gave me my arm band in college…. I love that piece no matter how simple it is. I think about who I was in college….I was….uummm, in my 20’s and still trying to find myself. I was a bit of a basket case at times and I really went through a ton of growth in college. But I am so different now than then.  Really only recently can I say I have  truly found myself….REALLY….38 and finally feeling secure in who I am, loving who I am. Finding my balance and feeling grounded. And with this new found confidence my creativity has soared.

I have been in a “retreat” mode for several months…..thinking…….but still trying to get work done. As I come out of my cave I realize how much I have neglected my blog and my photography, my art, painting etc….just been off. Time to rectify that….

Step One - start blogging again rather than just thinking about blogging and then not making the time for it just do it!

Step Two - Find your love of Photography and Painting again.

To accomplish both of these Ross and I have gone away for the weekend....we find ourselves in Portland. We are sitting 7 stories up at the Vintage Plaza on the corner of Washington and Broadway. Working….Yes, working. I have a fabric deadline and worked this morning on them but this afternoon feel the need to blog. Show some of the cool city shots I have taken with the new addition to my family….the PEN.

Last Saturday the girls came over and we had a day of creating..... A well needed time to gather as friends and just talk, laugh, make things, eat, drink...... We did a ton of silkscreening.....and then we made loation bars and candles, then bags for them to go in. What an amazing day it was. I am so blessed to have the friends I have. Very Thankful!!!!

Time to myself...

Wow a few hours to myself on the weekend. I was going to take a nap but after chatting with Lilly Bean (the cat). She convinced me to go into the studio and play with this bag idea I have to use with my silk screens.
The studio is messy. I swear it has been for the entire summer. Just can't seem to keep up with it. Anyway I was cleaning off the cutting board area and I came across a LOVE note from Olivia.
It made me smile. I'm happy to be in the studio for a bit. Surrounded by things I love.
Enjoy your day!

Round 2......

Nest has made the second round.....YEAH and thanks to everyone who voted. As much as this is fun there is a little competition that comes out of me. I also get a anxious and self conscious......to be expected I guess.

Now here we go again....the voting starts today go to Fat Quarterly dot com and vote.....

IMG_0138

I also have to announce I just made my first cut into Wrenly....it is always a moment when that happens it means the chaos of Market is beginning....I am so excited for my booth and my projects and I can't wait to share them with you. Soon, my friend I will share.

The second round & Wrenly....

Well thanks to all of you who voted for me, I made it to the second round of March Modern Fabric Madness! Yeah! The next round of voting will be on the 14th.....It looks like they have now added links to the fabric collections so you can see what they look like. Which is good, kind of a pain to google each collection. They are learning as they go on the best way to make this fun and the least amount of work. I think it is fun and I really appreciate all of your support. I will let you know when the next round comes about so that we can make it to the third round, wouldn't that be cool.....

I'm having one of those mornings where all I want to do is take a nap after my work out.....just a tough one. I am determined to keep going to lose the last of the baby weight...god it takes forever to get it off. I know I'm strong but just have a layer of LOVE on top of the muscle. The other night when I was cuddling with Olivia and she says to me, "Mommy you are getting skinny." "Thank you honey." I replied. "Well, mom," she pauses as to think about what she was going to say, "you had some larger parts!" Totally sincere in her words. "Well, that is true honey, it is from you, your sister, and your brother!" "Well, you are getting skinny like me." and she gives me a huge hug! You have to appreciate her honesty. Too funny.....makes me smile.

As I promised I have some photos of Wrenly.....right now just the quilting cotton. The home decorator and cotton voile are to come.....

What do you think?? Now I just have to get a few other deadlines done and I can start making things out of this yummy new collection. I am truly happy with it...hard for me to say sometimes. I usually have some sort of criticism of it my fabric when it arrives but I am starting to enjoy it as it comes and know that it was the best I could do at the time. Learning to appreciate myself. Which is huge.....

Hope you have a great day!!

Need your help.....

Hello my friends....I need your help! There is a great on-line magazine called Fat Quarterly and they have started a March Madness competition based on fabric....March Modern Fabric Madness. I am honored to say that I have been included in the top 64 fabric collections to be voted on by their readers. Help me win each round and get to the championships....with the hopes of the title......Here are the collections that they have put in the mix....Looks like I have two fabric collections that they feel are worthy (that is too cool) - if I am reading the brackets correct.

Looks like Nest will be first competing with a collection called Marine. Now I have not heard of this collection and am on a mission to see what it is. If anyone knows please let me know!!! This is on the first round March 2....that would be tomorrow!

The second collection is Bliss from this fall....

Looks like Bliss is competing with a collection called Queen Street. Again, I feel so out of the loop I don't know the fabric collection. If anyone knows of it please let me know so I can check it out. The competition for this one is March 6...that would be Sunday.

I am going to try to find out what the other collections look like and post them.....better hurry!

Now what do you think? Am I worthy....I think this is going to be fun even if I don't make it far I will keep my eyes on the competition and place my vote.

Love to all!!!

The rest of the best of 2010.....

Where did I leave off on my adventures of the past year.....OH yes, accomplishments....my mom had a huge accomplishment this year - I was a very proud daughter seeing my mom be inducted into the Quilter's Hall of Fame. Tears filled my eyes as she spoke of her lifetime of quilting, realizing that I have been apart of it for so many years.

We were having a Christmas dinner at my house when Sondy pulled me aside and told me that she pulled Trea's name for their family secret santa and she really wanted one of my little bird paintings....How could I ever say no, I was honored! Well, funny thing is towards the end of the evening Trea pulls me aside and tells me how she got Sondy's name for secret santa and wanted one of my birdy paintings....I was so excited to get to do the paintings for them....and oh so wished I could be a fly on the wall when they opened gifts.

Luckily I had Julie (another girlfriend of ours) at the studio when I was painting and she mentioned it to Sondy's husband so he got a photo for me....kind of like being a fly on the wall.....

Happy New Year.....a little late.....

Welcome to 2011! It is starting out as crazy as last year. Is that something that just happens as we get older and have more responsibilities? I also consider technology a culprit in the crazyness, it seems I am always able to be in touch except on about 8 minutes of my drive to and from our house, no cell service. I remember when......we didn't drive with phones, home phones were connected to the wall, our computer was connected to the desk (no lap tops). I was wondering when the comment "I remember when" was going to come out of my mouth. Alas, technology has a huge roll in my life and I will have to learn to find a balance.

I recently was reading AnnaMaria Horner's blog post about 2010, she remembered her year in bits and pieces of good, bad, sad, happy all of those emotions. It made me reflect on my own year. What happened in 2010 that I remember...what made me cry, laugh, reflect, sing, dance..... I am not as eliquent with words as others but I do take some good photos and they can help me convey my feelings. Here you go my memories of 2010......(in no particular order just how I feel)

To start with something beautiful, my family....whom I love so much and have taught me so many things this year...

Patience, friendship, love, the art of dancing and singing just because you can.....and being silly

December....holiday....

December is here and I am in full swing making holiday gifts for my family and friends. My husband thinks I am crazy because I am working every night on gifts but I love it. To make something special for the people I love full fills me. Now I can't wait to wrap them up and give them away...just have to finish!

I thought I would share a birdcage that I made about a month ago...with a little help from the puppy and kittens. No they didn't really help but it was fun to play with them with the sticks.

Birdcage.blog
Inside this lovely cage is a "Wish Bird". I have a great friend that once gave me a cup that said wish, wish, wish, wish all down the side of it. I found myself staring at that cup and finally just took out a piece of paper and wrote a wish. There have been several wishes added to this up over the past couple of years. The thought of having a special place to put a wish has been growing on me and I thought about my obsession with birds and how I could make  a bird into a place for special wishes.  Each one of the "Wish Birds" that I am making for gifts have been uniquely crafted with embroidery, beads and LOVE for the special friend. It is important to me to give to these friends and family something from my heart and that is just for them. Once they are all done I will photograph them to show you.....

Lillyshadow.blog
Lilly Bean, my little shadow, likes to help me while I make the birds and other goodies in the studio. I love having the kittens in the studio. They get into trouble sometimes but they are so cuddly and cute you can't get too mad at them.

I finally finished Teague's birthday vest. I had to start over three times.....he is long and skinny so I had to adapt the pattern to fit his cute little body.

Clouds.....(again)

Tonight I discovered how to keep my 11 month old busy while I cleaned the kitchen.

1. Start with an empty dishwasher and a sink full of dishes.

2. Load Spoons (only) into the silverware basket.

3. Place 11 month old at the edge of the dishwasher so he can see the spoons.

4. Proceed to load the dishwasher leaving the other silverware until last.

5. Don't dilly dally around he still has an short attention span. (be careful to make sure you empty all the water out of the cups before loading - he does not like water on his head)

So happy to have the time to do that becasue the kitchen was driving me crazy. The girls are so good at playing together they let me clean but Teague is just everywhere these days.

My interest in clouds continues...I have decided to do a post a week about clouds....I even have some from my brother. He sent me a photo that he took the other day and I asked if I could post it he said yes and thought that I should learn more about the names of the clouds.  I love the idea but honestly I so don't have time to read about clouds I am lucky I have this time to blog.

September...already...I mean really!!!

Wow, it is fall around here. The wind, cooler tempretures, school starting....this is the first year that we have had to even recongnize the school year....Olivia started kindergarten this year...wow she is 5.....I remember when she was born! Never thought that I would say that. Funny how you turn into your family without meaning too.

Well, mom and I had a great taping at Quilting Arts TV and I hope to get some photos soon. I will share I promise...once we were done with taping I sat down to work on my fabric while mom and I sat in the hotel...my computer decided to just quit. Yep quit..oh my god I couldn't believe it. My total mistake was that I hadn't backed up in 2 weeks or so...lots of new fabric designs were on my computer and not on my back up hard drive. Panic set in.....but at the same time I knew I couldn't do anything until I got home and called my Mac Doctor.

As we were coming home on Saturday I found out that our daycare was closing on September 30, 2010....thought someone smacked me up side the head. SH** what was I going to do with a 3 year old and a 11 month old...and the emotion hit me. I will admit that I had just started my period..I am an emotional gal so you can imagine. I cried all the way to Chicago....daycare, my computer, my hormones....I think that people were looking at me like I had just left my boyfirend or something like that.

I still don't know for sure what we are going to do for daycare. It is hard in a really small town to find good care! But life goes on and we will figure out what to do...I am trying to be stong and positive so that the kids don't know and so that I don't lose it. The week went on...Liv started Kindergarten...such a big girl. I am so proud of her.

Then Vi got sick...high fever - 104- last night...I lost another day of work but on the good note I had a day with Miss Vivi.....we really kind of enjoyed getting to be together in spite of the circumstances. She is wonderful....I don't get much time to spent with her, it was lovely!!

It is now Thursday night.....listening to the football game on the TV, Ross and I just got home from our first parent teacher thingy...My dad and step-mom are in town and they watched the kids while we were gone...I am happy as a lark that my computer is home. All is well, some freak thing happened but I didn't lose anything and I am backing up every day. I am rolling with the punches....I have little control of somethings in my life and am dealing with it.... the best that an quirky, intense, artist type can. There are probably more words to describe my personality but I think that will do for now......Donkey (for those of you who don't watch Shrek there is a line - "That'll do Donkey." that we love to quote in our house.)

While I waited for my computer I was forced to get my butt in gear with my flannel...it has been sitting here calling me for weeks....Bliss...what am I going to do with you?  I figured out my "free pattern" for Free Spirit and a new Sewing Card and..... some new stuffed friends. I would say that maybe there was some good reasons to have the computer be out of comission for 5 days.

Life is crazy and I am reminding myself to breathe and to remember to just take the day and make the most of it. I am so being tested these days.....
